My personal (unprofessional) ((non research based)) purely experience based opinions on detoxes and cleanses.
This extremely opinionated blog will share reasons to cleanse and all the reasons not to cleanse.
Most people use detoxes and cleanses as a solution for weight loss. A quick fix or pre vacation last ditch effort to lose 5 more pounds. Don't detox for these reasons.
First of all, a pre vacation cleanse is going to have you sitting on the toilet instead of sitting on the beach. I'm fairly certain you're not planning on eating spinach and drinking water on your trip. Detoxing your body before you plan to go and eat super unhealthy and drink for 7 days straight may (very likely) give you the shits.
Secondly, most detoxes have you starving. When you're in a starving state for too long your body ((may)) start eating away at the fat, but it's also going to store more once you start eating again. Again, I'm assuming you're not planning on eating healthy during vacation, and if you're looking for quick fix weight loss solutions I'm also assuming you don't have a nutrition and fitness plan lined up and scheduled for the next 30 days. So detoxing your body only to fill it back up with unhealthy foods isn't going to help you maintain any sort of weight loss.
You can't workout on a cleanse or detox. You're putting very little energy into your body, expending it on a workout could be dangerous. If you're planning to cleanse before an event or vacation you'll have 3-7 days (depending on duration of cleanse) where you give up the opportunity to exercise (build muscle & lose fat). Do yourself a favor and continue to workout and build muscle the week prior to vacation so your body will have increased ability to burn off the junk you eat. Also, pushing through your workouts and being on point with your nutrition before walking down the beach in your bikini will give your muscles that extra "pump" and definition. You'd be amazed at how big a difference one week can really make on your progress!
Detoxes and cleanses introduce poor behavior into your lifestyle and children's lifestyle. If you allow yourself to go hungry and succeed at losing 1-5 pounds from not eating and treating your body properly to function you will start to think of this as a solution to your weight loss and your kids will also see that mommy isn't eating.
Detoxes and cleanses are not a lifestyle. You cannot maintain the habits for a long duration of time, therefore they are not a realistic weight loss solution. For proper weight loss you should exercise and organize a nutrition plan according to your caloric needs and weight loss goals (this is where I come in!)
Low cognitive abilities and low energy during a detox or cleanse. Most of you don't have the ability to sit on the couch all day for 3-7 days while you cleanse. You'll be going to work, dropping the kids at sports, and continuing on with your very busy (high energy) week. You'll be expending all of this energy and putting very little back in. This sounds miserable and dangerous for everyone in your wake.
Most cleanses fail or are followed incorrectly. Raise your hand if you were ever on a cleanse and you were like, "ohh one little chip won't hurt." OR "an apple is healthy I can still eat this.." or maybe you got through day 1 and on day 2 you were all "Well I think that's good enough.." Yah we've all been there.
So I'm sure you want to know, when should cleanses be used?
Cleanses and detoxes should be used prior to starting a new health and fitness program. Detoxes are a great kick start to flush out the bad and introduce more of the good.
If you're feeling sluggish, low energy, your bowel movements are inconsistent you may also want to consider a cleanse (consult doctor as well).
I recommend The 3 Day Refresh to flush everything out and detox your body before you get moving and eating healthy on your new fitness program. It's like a kick start into your new healthy lifestyle that will increase your energy levels, get your digestion back on track and get your mindset in the mode to crush some weight loss goals.
The 3 Day Refresh is a detox that doesn't have you actually go starving. You get to eat meal replacement shakes and a select amount of veggies.
If you have any questions about my experiences with detoxes, you want more info on the fitness and nutrition program bundled with the 3 Day Refresh, or you just wan't to chat about your goals, feel free to email me @ firstname.lastname@example.org
